The Journey So Far – From YTS to Business Success
My career began in 1986 as a YTS for a National Shoe Repair Chain, where I had the privilege to work with Henry Stewart. Despite being deaf and mute, he was an inspiring role model who taught me that success is possible regardless of challenges. Even though I am dyslexic, I advanced in the industry, YTS - Benchman to relief manager, working across Scotland, I was then promoted to managing a shop for another national chain. Eventually, I was asked to manage a shop in Manchester and later joined a specialist team to develop and train staff in watch repairs, which was highly successful.
I returned to Scotland, in 2010 newly married and with a child on the way, I decided to open my own shoe repair shop.
I opened Sole Saver’s on a shoestring budget, and I have continually invested in my business by upgrading machinery and growing within the independent shoe repair industry. I have maintained my shop according to my skills and values over the years.
Running a successful business requires ambition, skills, inspiration, luck, determination, and adaptability, especially during uncertain times.
In early 2017, I was asked to take on the role of chairperson of the Society of Master Shoe Repairs. Unfortunately, my work in this role was cut short when I was diagnosed with cancer late in 2017. During my treatment, I had to rely heavily on my staff and family to keep my shop running. Despite my illness, I stayed involved in the shop and attended as many meetings and trade shows as possible.
At one of these events, I was introduced to a new concept from Vibram (Sole Factor). They sought skilled shoe repair professionals across the UK to collaborate with them in enhancing the repair industry by offering a wide range of custom materials for customers to personalise their footwear. Recognising the potential benefits for the industry, I signed up with Vibram on the spot. This partnership is proving to be a success with our customers.
Thankfully, I made the right decision as the pandemic soon hit, it severely affecting my industry. With almost no one working from offices, our regular repairs declined. However, we adapted by repairing more walking boots and trainers, thanks to being a Vibram diamond store and having access to their extensive range of soles and new units.
